  • 1959
    • W. Tobler creates MIMO
      • First ever model to combine computers and map making. All modern GIS applications are inspired by this model.
  • 1963
    • CGIS is created
      • Canada
      • Developed to survey Canada's land, and was one of the first experiments in large scale GIS.
    • URISA
      • URISA
      • URISA is formed from a coalition of working people with the goal of improving urban environments and aiding in certain situations.
  • 1965
    • SYMAP
      • First (successful) event involving a computer and automatic mapping. Developed at NTI, finished at Harvard.
  • 1967
    • Similar attempt to SYMAP by Britain
    • CIA creates an automatic mapper for the world.
  • 1970
    • CGIS is completed and ready for use
    • CIA uses TOPIC to work with line-of-sight.
  • 1972
    • IBM creates their own mapping computer.
  • 1974
    • Pioneer Howard Fisher dies.
  • 1978
    • Progress is made on the Global Positioning System (GPS) project as it moves into phase II.
  • 1981
    • GPS is completed.

    • US Army gets involved, creates a GRASS organization.

    • Peter Bourrough
      • Principles of Geographic Information Systems for Land Resources Assessment
      • Publishes a book called Principles of Geographic Information Systems for Land Resources Assessment.

    • GEO World
      • GEO World
      • Magazine is created, first magazine for geographic technology.
  • 1991
    • "Big Book"
      • Maguire, Goodchild, and Rhind finish their book.
  • 1992
    • GIS Europe is launched
  • 1995
    • 10th Geospatially-oriented satellite is launched into orbit (GEO Asia Pacific).
  • 1999
    • "Big Book II" is released.
